An interactiona1 approach to using standized self-report instruments as part of assessment of couples entering marital therapy or enrichment is described. This appach to assessment emphasizes the regresive relationship between professionals clients in developing an understanding dyadic patterns. Marital inventories can 'ill a number of functions in marital rapy and enrichment, including pro ting hope, developing a relationship intervention to marital issues, identifying problem areas, promoting discussion, continuing couple myths, matching clients to vices, intervention planning and placent, outcome evaluation, and preventive vices. Finally, the most prominent and researched measures of marital satisfaction, instability, and intimacy are presented and evaluated regarding how well !y can fulfill these functions.
