Isi artikelWe hope it is clear from the title of this paper that we are linking reading with talk. What is less clear is that our data include talk about television as well as talk about print. The data that we will be presenting comes from two different research contexts. Janet Maybin is using data collected from her research programme, which focus on how 10 - 12-year-old children construct meanings and understanding through informal talk together during the school day. The data were collected using a radio mike and small cassette recorders. They include talk about texts: both school texts, and informal texts created by the children themselves. Gemma Moss is using data from the Television Literacy Research Project which undertook an intensive series of small group interviews with children aged between 7 and 12, designed to elicit what they knew and understood about television in a variety of different ways.
