Abstract
Introduction : Candida albicans is an opportunistic human fungal pathogen, exists as a commensal in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. Lately, resistance to antifungal agents has become a problem. Allium sativum has been used as spices and for health since a long time ago. A. sativum has been shown to have antifungal effects on various fungi. This study aims to determine the effect of A. sativum on the growth of C. albicans.
Methods : Bulbs of A. sativum from the Bogor Agricultural Institute were extracted by homogenizing it with aquades in a blender, then filtered through Whatman No. 1 filter paper. The method used is disc diffusion on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar. This study compared various concentrations of aquades extract of A. sativum, positive control (ketoconazole 1 mg/ml) and negative control.
Results : Data processing was performed with statistic computer software with One Way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni statistical tests. Aquades extract of A. sativum with concentrations of 50 mg/ml, 100 mg/ml, 150 mg/ml have antifungal effect. The greater concentration of aquades extract of A. sativum, the greater the inhibition zone formed.
Conclusion : Aquades extract of A. sativum inhibit the growth of C. albicans in vitro.
