Abstract
Background. Medical students experience higher levels of depression compared to general population. People who experience depressive symptoms have higher risk for developing impaired cognitive processing speed and executive function because of the involvement of HPA-Axis which can alter brain structures.
Objectives. To determine the comparison of cognitive processing speed and executive function between medical students with and without depressive symptoms.
Methods. This research was done cross-sectionally using analytic methods to 113 medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Demographic questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to measure depressive symptoms, and set of Trail Making Tests to assess cognitive processing speed and executive function were used in this research. Data analysis using independent t-test.
Results. There were 113 respondents, which 50.4% of them experienced depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms were found to be the most common in females (55.1%), temporarily living off-campus, first year students (63.2%), were having family problems (87.5%), and family depression history (88.5%) proportion. The mean of cognitive processing speed is 19.88 seconds, and of executive function is 36.60 seconds. There isn’t any significant difference between cognitive processing speed, and also executive function, in both medical students with depressive symptoms and non-depressive symptoms (p>0.05).
Conclusions. Difference in cognitive processing speed and executive function between medical students with and without depressive symptoms is statistically insignificant.
