This study is a case study which attempts to investigate the types, functions, and reasons of code-switching used by the fourth Rector of Universitas Terbuka (UT). It was conducted using four video recordings of Rectors UT who was interviewed by several media and taped in 2014-2017. Three theoretical backdrops were employed in this study, namely Poplack's (1980) was applied to investigate the types of code-switching, Appel and Muysken's (2006) and Keziel's (2000) functions of code-switching were used to identify the functions of code-switching and an interview with the Rector was conducted in order to gain detailed reasons for code-switching. It is concluded that the types of code-switching used by the subject are intrasentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and tag switching has 145 occurrences or 83.33%, inter-sentential switching is 26 or 14.95%, and tag switching occurs 3 times or 1.72%. There were four functions of code-switching identified, namely referential, clarification, reiteration, and personalization. The subject used referential more often and personalization was the rarest used function. The interview revealed that the reasons for code-switching used were difficulty to find equivalent words, message emphasis, clarification, effort to make her listeners understand and become familiar with English expressions in terms of long distance education. |
