Abstract
Background. Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a global and increasing problem in health. Ineffectivity of the antibiotics leads to prolonged infection and death. Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the bacteria that frequently found resistant to several antimicrobes. Infection caused by carbapenem resistant A. baumannii is strarting to increase in several countries, including Indonesia. This resistance can be caused by Metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) enzymes which can be expressed from blaVIM and blaIMP genes.
Method. This is an observational descriptive study. Study samples were carbapenem resistant A. baumannii isolates from clinical specimens in Atma Jaya Hospital taken from January 2014 – September 2017 period which were stored as collection in
Microbiology Laboratorium, Faculty of Medicine, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Antibiotic susceptibility test data were taken from WHONET 5.3. program. DNA extraction and DNA amplification by PCR were done to 33 isolates that could be revived from collection.
Results. During 3 years and 9 months, 142 isolates of A. baumannii were collected from clinical specimens, representing 5,9% from all bacterial clinical isolates and 11,16% of all Gram negative bacteria. There were 73 isolates (51,4%) which are
resistant to carbapenem. From a total of 33 carbapenem resistant A. baumannii that successfully revived, none of the isolates carried blaVIM or blaIMP genes. Almost all carbapenem resistant A. baumannii isolates were found to be multiresistant to
antibiotics tested, except colistin.
Conclusion. This study found none of the carbapenem resistant A. baumannii isolates carried blaVIM or blaIMP genes.
