Isi artikel
Proverb is a short, metaphorical fixed form containing wisdom, truth, moral values, and traditional views of a speech community handed down from generation to generation. As part of language, proverbs are closely related to and show values of a culture. In foreign language teaching, it is not only important to improve the learner’s linguistic competence but also the cultural knowledge of the target language. The cultural knowledge is an indispensable part of foreign language learning. Language teaching may become more effective through a close consideration of the cultural values of the language proverbs. Proverbs are important in language teaching because much of the socio-cultural values of a society are contained in proverbs. By learning and understanding English proverbs the students will have knowledge of socio-cultural values of English speaking societies. This knowledge, in turn, may increase cross-cultural understanding of the students. It is, therefore, advisable that ELT teachers may include proverbs as the teaching materials in their classes.
