Isi artikelThis study is aimed to describe and explain the coherence unity of students’ research paper abstract at English department of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. Then also, this study is to investigate meaning relationship in process coherence and unity of the text. In this study, qualitative descriptive method was applied. The data of the research were sentences or paragraphs of students abstract of research paper. Data were collected through observation and documentation technique. Data were verify through contextual semantic and the reliability of data was analyzed through stability technique, observe and read the data continuously. Classified and reduced data were analyzed through descriptive technique and principle of discourse analysis approach. Various analysis approach also were used in analyzed coherence of abstract discourse. This analyses applied Shiffrin rule which explained that structure consists of syntagmatic and paradigmatic structure This study conclude that students abstract research have narrative style. Semantic relations in building coherence of abstract discourse are causality, amplicative, and extensive relationship. The variety of sentence and the way in expressing content need to be improved. Students should use their creativity in composing an abstract. In other word, students are less optimal in their language productivity.
