Isi artikelThis study examines the influence of Indonesian language structure on the occurrence of errors when Indonesian students produce English sentences for a university level essay assignment. This study was conducted to investigate the following issues: (1) types of morphosyntactic sentence errors, (2) the frequency of errors; and (3) the influence of Indonesian language structure on the occurrence of errors made in producing English sentences. The participants were fifty Indonesian students studying at the University of Queensland, Australia and the data was taken from one of the participants’ 1500-wordacademic essays from an assignment from any courses in which they had enrolled in their first semester. Data analysis was based on the mixed analysis methodology (blending error analysis, contrastive analysis, and morphosyntactic analysis). The results revealed various types of sentence errors in Indonesian students’ English sentences and these are listed from the most to the least frequent types of errors. The findings also suggest that Indonesian language structure may influence Indonesian students’ writing processes in English. All participants wrote English sentences which would be considered well-formed sentences based on Indonesian language structure, but these were not well-formed English sentences. As a result, students produced errors in their writing.
