Isi artikelCommunication between people in society is very important because as human being people can life without others. In this modern age, people are getting a lot easier to have indirect communication. People do not need to be in the same place to communicate each others. One of the ways for people to communicate is through media. There are a lot mass media which help people to communicate indirectly such as printed media, electronic or digital media. Nowadays, there are a lot of types of printed media beside newspaper and magazine. Fanzine is a nonprofessional and nonofficial publication produced by fans of a particular cultural phenomenon (such as a literary or musical genre) for the pleasure of others who share their interest. A punkzine is a zine devoted to punk culture, most often punk rock music, bands, or the DIY (Do It Yourself) punk ethic. Appraisal is a system of interpersonal meaning which concerned with the evaluation: the kinds of attitudes that are negotiated in a text, the strength of feeling involved and the ways in which values are sourced and readers aligned (Martin and Rose, 2003). There are 3 aspects in appraisal: attitude, graduation and engagement. Ideology is a central concept in critical discourse analysis. Van Dijk in Eriyanto (2001:13) states that the aim of ideology is to organize action problem in group or community. This research explores the appraisal system which is found in punkzine columns in order to identify ideology which the writers want to present to the readers. Six columns were taken from United States punkzine published in 1980-1990. The columns are analysed by using appraisal theory. In this thesis, appraisal theory, focuses on the three domains: attitude, graduation, and engagement in order to respond to three research questions, namely (1) what kinds of aspects identified in punkzine columns? (2) What kinds of attitudes identified through appraisal system? (3) What kinds of ideology in punkzine columns? The research was qualitative and interpretative in nature in which the data were analyzed by employing the appraisal analytical framework (Martin and Rose, 2003) in order to identify the ideology which found in punkzine columns upon the identification of the attitude, graduation, and engagement in punkzine columns. In terms of methodology the study could be classified into non participant observation (Sudaryanto, 1993) in which the researcher was not involved as the subject of the study. The study reveals that the writers’s attitude identified through appraisal devices in punkzine columns. The attitude that the writers wants to tell to the reader, are (1) negative attitude and assessment given by the writers to the government and government supporting party, (2) positive attitude and assessment to punk music and punk circumstances, and (3) negative and positive attitude and assessment. In addition, ideology that the writers wants to present is opposed to government and supporting the free thought and free speaking. In conclusion, it is difficult for minority group for speaking freely in national mass media because of the burden of social norm and social judgement to the minority.
