Isi artikelThis article analyses the way English grammar is described in documents issued between 1998 and 2002 in England for the National Literacy Strategy (NLS) and for the lower secondary Key Stage 3 (KS3) National Strategy. The analysis reveals that the NLS and KS3 Strategy do not consistently follow a recognised approach to grammatical description, and there are numerous ‘grammatical’errors, inconsistenciesand inappropriate examples. As a result, teachersusing NLS and KS3 materialsmay be contributing to uncertaintyabout grammar. Teachersand pupils have beenunwisely servedby many of the materialswritten for the National LiteracyStrategyand Key Stage 3 Strategies, and an immediate reviewof the strategiesis required. Without such a review, principledand well-informed approaches to grammar teaching are unlikely to emerge. The review should be informed by the experienceof approaches of other countries to describing and teaching grammar to support the development of literacy between the ages of 7 and 14 years.
