Isi artikelThe majority of the population in the Caribbean state of St Lucia speak an African- French creole known as Kwéyòl which has traditionally enjoyed very low status. The election in 1997 of a Labour government with more positive attitudes towards Kwéyòl heralds new opportunities for Kwéyòl to play a more emancipatory role in St Lucian life. This paper draws on policy documents and interviews with educational policy=makers and leading figures in the field of Kwéyòl literacyto document changes in the status of the language in official and popular domains. Carrington’s (1997) analysis of determinants of success for vernacular literacywill be used as a framework to evaluate recent developments.
