Isi artikel
This paper identifies the features of effective educational talk. Contextual differences between educational and social settings (relating to the topic, the aims of the participants, the extent of shared understandings, the need for ‘truth’ and the nature of participants’ roles) are used as starting points for the examination of undergraduates’ seminar discourse, video-recorded during a study of small-group classroom discussions. Using an analytic approach which focuses on content and the ‘work done’ by the talk, the following are identified as important features of effective educational talk: (1) an appreciation of the purpose of the talk; (2) a shared understanding of the relevant vocabulary; (3) an appreciation of the need for testing hypotheses and using valid evidence; (4) an acceptance of an educational agenda above a social agenda
