Isi artikel
Classrooms once characterised by pupil silence are now supposedly characterised by pupil talk. There is a danger, however, of this resulting in insufficient time for reflective thinking by individuals. While acknowledging the contribution of social constructivism and of a more generally child-centred approach to education, the author argues that present preferred practices, while rooted in a Romantic view of the child, suffer from a partial acceptance of the Romantic view of childhood, and do not allow sufficient space for personal reflection. In order for the best balance to be struck, teachers must be flexible in terms of classroom organisation.
