Isi artikelThis paper focuses on adult literacy as a language issue, identifying four areas of contemporary change: the spread of a small number of world languages; the position of dialects, Creoles and other varieties of language; the choice of language for education and for official life; the rate at which languages of the world are disappearing. The role of literacy is ambiguous in all these changes and two opposing trends are identified: the globalisation of literacy and the diversification of literacy.
