Isi artikel
Several concerns have been raised, within education, about differences and inequalities in girls' and boys' spoken language and interactional styles. Principally, there has been concern about the ways in which (some) boys dominate talk in the classroom, as in other contexts, and about girls' relative invisibility. Prompted by such concerns, several teachers and educational policy-makers have developed strategies for the provision of equal opportunities between girls and boys. This paper reviews such developments. The paper identifies three broad approaches to the provision of equal opportunities—an 'anti-sexist' approach, a 'liberal approach' and a 'pro-female' approach—each of which would suggest different strategies for positive action.
