Isi artikel
Not saying or writing what is believed to be false is asserted as a basic educational and general social value. This value of rational realism is endemic to the conduct of modem science, but not to all school subjects, or to certain institutions of authority in society. Examples are taken from a variety of sources: history texts, newspaper reporting, courts of law and government. These illustrations show that the telling of the truth is commonly subordinated to other goals, in particular the self-justification or the profits, power and prestige of those promoting the lies. The extent to which this contempt for the truth by the Establishment is seen as hypocritical and serves to undermine authority has yet to be investigated.
