Isi artikel
This paper rehearses some of the speculations, often based on mutually incompatible theories, about how blindness can affect the development of language and meaning. Examples are given of preverbal and verbal behaviours that illustrate some of the problems that can arise and some of the adaptive strategies that parents and children develop. The concept of verbalism is also examined, and attention is drawn to its inadequacy, both as a means of conceptualising certain phenomena and as the basis of educational practice. It is then argued that the absence of the master sense of vision does not inevitably lead to an impoverished understanding of the real world, and that language can in fact be used to compensate for some of the potentially handicapping effects of congenital blindness.
