Isi artikelSpeakers/writers from one social group seeking membership in or making appeals to another, e.g. students attempting to join a university community, usually construct a stereotypical model of the target discourse to mimic. Stereotypes are constructed partly from familiar discourses associated with the target. The result, when it falls so far short of the target as to be disruptive of community standards, is hyperfluency, defined as discourse that is both inappropriate and incompetent in the target audience's estimation. Since the target is frequently perceived as prestigious, hyperfluency usually exhibits lexical, syntactic, and rhetorical features associated with formal discourse; since the speaker/ writer is a novice, it also exhibits features associated with inelegant or incorrect discourse. This combination may give the impression of either incompetence or insincerity. However, this view is based on an unrealistic expectation that style be sincere and authentic rather than appropriate to a given context and is exacerbated by prejudice against grandiloquent language and ignorance of the conventions of other communities that may serve as models. Despite its unsavory reputation, hyperfluency can signal the growth of an individual's linguistic resources. Awareness of hyperfluency should lead English teachers to better pedagogy as regards hyperfluent writers.
