Isi artikel
An action research project was set up to monitor the awareness raising, and other, effects of a language diversity survey in a London College of Further Education. Interviews with students and staff reveal a variety of influences from the survey. Four stages in the response to the administration of a survey are suggested: the 'ventilation' of views, 'resistance' to the survey, 'focusing' on issues for debate, and the 'effecting' of change. The research indicates the potential of a survey to raise awareness and promote change, breaking the 'spiral of silence' which suppresses recognition of language diversity in schools and colleges in Britain. This potential to raise issues and promote change through the administration of a language survey in an educational institution arises as much from the survey process as from the statistical results produced.
