Isi artikelThe article explores, through a close scrutiny of a series of letters written by a nine year old girl, the question what does a young writer know and need to know about the English language? The renewed importance and topicality of this question in the UK is emphasised by the setting up of the Kingman Committee of Inquiry into the teaching of the English language. In what follows, a distinction is drawn between informed usage as knowledge of language, as demonstrated in practice, and informed usage as knowledge about language, something which can be explicitly articulated by the user. The writer studied shows an implicit understanding of the requirements of the written mode, of register, of English syntax and of English orthography. This implicit knowledge, it is argued, underlies and is sufficient for her developing competence as a writer. Given that the texts studied show an informed usage of language which appears to be largely independent of formal instruction about language, the question arises whether knowledge about language is a necessary condition of the development of writing skills.
