Isi artikel
The last ten years of surveys of users of languages in addition to English in Britain are examined here through a review of the work of three bodies, which have operated mainly in London schools: The Inner London Education Authority Language Census, The Survey of Linguistic Diversity in London Schools, and The Linguistic Minorities Project. Various flaws and problems in the methodology of these surveys are discussed. Methodological problems in the nature of language diversity surveys as social surveys, as linguistic research, and as ideological activities, are summarised. The conclusion is made that under-reporting has occurred in all cases. Some suggestions for future practice are indicated.
