Isi artikelAn argument is presented for the importance of children playing serious roles in investigating, planning, monitoring and managing the environments of their own communities. This is seen as critical to the development of primary environmental care: a community-based approach to meeting basic needs through the empowerment of local communities while ensuring the protection and optimal utilization of natural resources. The environmental movement has relied more upon social mobilization, which activates people to carry out predetermined agendas, rather than community participation, where residents are themselves involved in the identification of problems as well as actions aimed at solving them. Primary schools offer the most universal potential for fostering this approach, but most public schools remain isolated from their surrounding communities. When children are involved in environmental programs it is usually in action with little or no research or reflection. Some valuable examples are provided from Peru, Ecuador, England, Sri Lanka and the USA of children’s participation in household environmental management and in the environmental planning and management of communities. Special attention is given to the values of collaboration between children and senior citizens and to the problem of how to build upon local research and action to develop a more global concern for environments.
