Isi artikelIn their commentary on our article "The Female Community Health Volunteer Programme in Nepal: Decision makers' perceptions of volunteerism, payment and other incentives" (2010) Maes, Kohrt and Closser (2010) criticise what they refer to as "policy recommendations". The development of policy recommendations was not the aim of our study, which we describe as intending to explore the attitudes of stakeholders who have participated in the design and running of the Female Community Health Volunteer (FCHV) Programme' in Nepal (Glenton et al., 2010). Nor, we would argue, do we make such recommendations. We do suggest that it may not be useful to promote a generic set of incentives applicable to all contexts, and that programmes should ensure that the expectations of community health workers, programme managers and policy makers are in alignment if low attrition and high performance are to be achieved.
