Cognitive function impairment is a neurodegenerative process which often experienced by the elderly. One of the factors associated with cognitive function is grandparenting. Grandparenting in Indonesia is common and has become a social norm. Methods. This study was conducted on July 2016 – January 2017 in PUSAKA, West Jakarta with 93 respondents. The data were collected using grandparenting activitiy questionnaire, cognitive function assessment using Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Verbal Fluency Test (VFT), depression assessment using Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and physical activity assessment using 24 hour recall physical activity. Results. Data analysis showed that education (p=0,000), grandparenting (p=0,001), the quality of grandparenting (p=0,021), types of grandparenting activity specifically preparing food and/or feeding child (p=0,000) and storytelling (p=0,031), also physical activity (p=0,013) had a significant association with global cognitive function assessed by MMSE. Meanwhile, education (p=0,003) also had a significant association with language cognitive function assessed by VFT. Conclusion. Grandparenting, the quality of grandparenting, types of grandparenting activity (preparing food and/or feeding child and storytelling) had a significant association with cognitive function. Physical, social activity, and cognitive stimulation while caring for grandchildren can prevent decline in cognitive function.
