For the past decade maize has been the seed companies' favoured crop. Research spending on it runs at $1.5 billion a year, four times that for wheat. Wheat needs more research. It is the most nutrient-rich of the world's cereals and the most widely planted crop. It is also the staple most vulnerable to climate change.
