The tenth year of reformasi brought eerie reminders of the era's beginning. Suharto's death-and the adulatory media coverage of it - highlighted both the profound changes since his presidency ended, as well as the failure to come fully to terms with his legacy of corruption and abuse of power. A financial crisis - this one, unlike the last, not of Asian origin - seemed poised for a major impact on the political and economic agenda. And a host of figures who had gained their political bearings in the New Order era's style of politicking and business dealing, including Vice President Jusuf Kalla and former president Megawati Sukarnoputri, positioned themselves to challenge Yudhoyono's bid to lead the country for another five-year term.
