Less than a year after Yudhoyono's election as president, many of his weaknesses had already become apparent-his indecisiveness, his excessive caution, and his unwillingness to confront religious extremists were chief among them. Nevertheless, in contrast to the aloof Megawati and the erratic Wahid, Yudhoyono stood out as far and away the post-Suharto president with the most complete complement of strategic vision, administrative skills, and political acumen. Yudhoyono's challenges have nevertheless been many. From responding to natural disasters, to combating terrorism, to the dauting task of reducing poverty abd reformong a notoriously corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy, it was clear that Yudhoyono's presidency would be a pivotal era in the nation's history.
