The General Elections Commission (KPU) has announced the result of the first round of the presidential election. The frontrunner, as predicted in the polls, is Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono with 33.58 percent of the vote. The incumbent President Megawati came in a reasonably close second place at 26.24 percent. Consequently, Megawati and Yudhoyono will face off in the second round of the presidential election on September 20, 2004.
