Isi artikelThe U.S.-led invasion of Iraq catalysed anti-American protests in Indonesia, as in many other parts of the world. At the same time, Indonesia's own conflicts at home festered. Peace in Aceh remained illusive, as the military and rebel free Aceh Movement, or GAM, competed over lucrative illicit commercial operations, and the goverment struggled to come to terms with the fact that an al Qaeda-linked terrorist outfit made up largely of Indonesians operated with deadly effect on Indonesian soil. It was against this backdrop that Indonesians looked ahead to the 2004 presidential election. The widely recognised success that they ended up representing seemed far from assured-even improbable.
