Isi artikelIndonesia is a unique country blessed with one of the most diverse, culturally rich collection of races, religions and ethnic groups of any country in the world. Its foinding fathers were well aware of this when they laid down the guiding principles of the republic, with a vision of a democratic, just and pluralist Indonesia. But since independence many of the founding fathers' dreans have failed to come to fruition. In the decades since 1945, the ideals of democracy, justice and pluralism were passed over in the struggle to keep the country "unified" and "strong." INstead of being enlightened national leaders, Indonesia's first two presidents played the role of strongmen, not far-sighted statemen and mentors.
