Isi artikelThe deadly terrorist attack on Bali's nightclubs and the scandal surrounding Tommy Suharto's murder of a juge who had convicted him of corruption enderscored two critical challenges to Indonesia's future. On the one hand, Jemahh Islamiyah and its sympathisers made violently abvious their rejection of a pliralist, democratic Indonesian state. At the same time, the legitimacy of democratic goverment suffered as the cronyism, nepotism, and impunity for the powerful that lingered on from the Suharto era threatened to undermine the supremacy of the law. Critical to addressing these issues was the removal of the military and its powerful interests from the day-to-day process of governing the country. Newly unburdened of the East Timor albatross, the civilian goverment opportunity to redefine the military's role for the nation's future.
