As Indonesia moves towards the August sessinon of the People's Consultative Assembly, or MPR, there is increasing speculation about Presidemt Wahid's chances of surving the forces at work against him. Insider are saying a group of ambitious politicians, including heavyweights Amien Rais and Akbar Tandjung, are scheming to unseat the president. Behind Rais and Tandjung, there is supposedly an orbit of powerbrokers, who are opposed to the incumbent president, and can bring considerable amounts of money, connections, and political skills to bear on the pending assault. Some of the more common names mentioned here include ex-ministers Fuad Bawazier, Ginandjar Kartasasmito, and ex-army chief Feisal Tandjung. Others have sighted retired general Prabowo Subianto mixing with the same crowd, raising fears that a Machiavellion plot is indeed being brewed.
