There are high expectations for the first parliament to be elected democratically in over 40 years. The atmosphere on the floor of the DPR (People's Representative Assembly, or parliament) has undergone breathtaking transformation over the past two years: whereas Suharto era parliaments were dull rubberstamp bodies, the current parliament is humming with activity. Gangs of frantic reporters, mobs of rowady students, and clusters of provincial delegations create the impresion thet the new parliament is the true locus of Indonesian democracy in action.
