As the economy continued to sputter along and violence persisted, it became clear that addressing the nation’s problems would depend in large part on a handful of key personalities. Among them were the scholar and religious leader turned anti-Suharto activist Amien Rais, the irresistible but often confounding President Abdurrahman Wahid and his Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri and farner Suharto adjutant Gen. Wiranto. Each endowed with their own gifts – and each their own profound shortcomings – it was on the balance of their formidable powers and those of other elite powerbrokers that the nation’s future appeared to rest.
