Aceh continues to occupy the centre of attention in Indonesia, and with good reason; by all accounts, conditions in the province are growing steadily worse, and secessionist demands appear increasingly widespread and implacable. For the Acehnese people-whose political hardships have spanned some three centuries-the future appears grim. For Indonesiaas a whole, however, the Acehnese conflict is not the grim harbinger of national dissolution or disorder that many view it as being.
