Isi artikelHope and dread mixed together as the country braced for first truly democratic elections since 1955. The strength of the newly empowered Islamic parties was a big question mark. So, too, was whether Megawati or another non-Golkar candidate would have the popularity to beat out President Habibie and Wiranto. At the same time, fear that the country might well disintegrate was acute, as conflict regard on in Aceh, and disgruntled regional groups pondered their own fates. Amid this environment once voice that emerged for a rational approach to solving yhe nation’s problems was that of Sri Mulyani Indrawati, then an economist at the University of Indonesia. At that early juncture approach to addressing challenges and for taking on entrenched political interests was already evident.
