Tragic and violent memories of farmer President Suharto's 32-year tenure still weigh heavy on many in Indonesia. That the strongman brooked little to no opposotion is well known, and the vehicle used to ensure that end fell on the shoulders of the country's security forces. The July 1996 attack on the headquarters of the Indonesian Democratic Party, or PDI, which left some five dead and many more missing, and the killings of four student demonstrators at Jakarta's Trisakti University in May 1998 are two of the most recent and iconic examples of goverment-backed attempts to silence disswent. But throughout the New Order era, political prisoners piled up in the country's jails and the distrust of the military and the police by man was palpable.
