Isi artikelBeginning in the second half of the sixteenth century, the southern border of Chile underwent a series of transformations that modified it into a space of commercial and cultural exchanges between indigenous and Spanish people. It is in this context that the poet Alonso de Ercilla y Zuñiga observed and experienced the events portrayed in his epic La Araucana (1569). This analysis presents the epic genre as one form of ideological elaboration of these historical events, a form that presupposes an extraordinary leap between the specific and the universal. The literary and structural function of the poem suggest that this epic is one narration among many of its great theme: the encounter and interaction between two cultures that is the legacy of the Conquest and the Arauco War. The history of Chile, along with its social, cultural and political environment, has evolved through a reality of encounters, of struggles to accept, and of failures to reconcile, persisting even today. This article builds upon Miguel Angel Vega's critical study La Araucana de Ercilla (1969), introducing his main points as a basis for better understanding the importance of dialogue among cultures in Chilean society today.
