Completion of the Human Genome Project (HGP) in 2001 has provided the largest foundation in the field of genetics by stimulating a variety of genetic studies in a wider sphere. Until now the medical industry has grown rapidly take advantage of the knowledge, resources, and various applications of genetic techniques to solve various problems related to the benejt of mankind. As a result of developments in this realm of genetic, genomic medicine appears focused on the health sector. Genomic medicine is a great springboard for diagnosing, monitoring, and provide therapy in a variety of diseases. In Indonesia, the development of genetic science has developed quite rapidly, however the comparison with other developing countries is still very behind. Genetic counseling as a science and a genetic counselor as a profession have grown rapidly in this developed countries, as well as any other developing countries. This paper will provide a description of the definition, scope, and development of genetic counseling in both the world and in Indonesia as an eflort to minimize the incidence and effects of genetic disease.
