Abstract
Background. Although often done, organ transplants in Indonesia is still a subject of debate. From the perspective of religion it is still debateable, especially Islam. Medical students should know not only the importance of organ donation for the safety of the patient's life, but also the controversies and the views of social, cultural, religious, legal, and ethical on organ transplant itself. Good knowledge and attitudes from various viewpoints about organ donation will greatly assist medical students in preparing to become good and professional doctors in the future.
Objective. Knowing the perception of Muslim medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Catholic University of Indonesia Atma Jaya toward organ transplants.
Method. The design of this study is an exploratory study aided by a questionnaire that has been adapted from The Organ Donor Attitude Questionnaire. A total of 38 Muslim medical students from Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia filled out the questionnaire in March-May 2017.
Results. Positive attitude is owned as much as 76.3% of respondents, while 23.7% are negative. Respondents who have high knowledge is 52.6% and 47.4% have low knowledge.
Conclusion. Not all Muslim students of the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of Indonesia Atma Jaya agreed with organ transplant. Women are more knowledgeable and have more positive attitude than men. More research is needed to explain on why women have higher knowledge and a more positive attitude toward organ donation than men.
