Isi artikelThe objectives of this study were to find out the relationship between students and their family history of atopy, and asthma incidence among junior high school students in the Municipality of Yogyakarta, using case control design. Study subjects were part of major study regarding asthma prevalence among junior high school students in the municipality of Yogyakarta. Four hundred and fiftyfour students, 222 (48,9%) boys and 232 (51,1%) girls and their families were enrolled in this study. Asthma incidence among the students was determined using validated ISAAC, ATS 78 and Robertson modification question naires. Case group consisted of students who were stated asthma and control group consisted of students without asthma who had been matched according to age, sex and class. Data on students and parental characteristics, students and their family history of atopy were collected using questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted using t-test, chi square test and risk estimation. One hundred ninety one students were identified as the "Case group" (with asthma) and 263 students as the control group (without asthma). Average subjects age among case group: 13,54 years old was not significantly different (p=O,556) compared to that in control group: 13,50 years old. History of atopy in students, student's sibling, mother, mother's sibling, father, father's sibling, grandmother and grandfather from mother, and grandfather from father related significantly and were risk factor for asthma incidence in students (OR more than I;CI 95% more than I). History of asthma in students, student's sibling, mother, father, mother's sibling, grandmother and grandfather from mother, and grandfather from father related significantly and were risk factor for asthma incidence in students (OR more than I;CI 95% more than I). History of rhinitis in students ,student's sibling, mother,father, father's sibling, grandmother and grandfather from mother, and grandfather from father related significantly and were risk factor for asthma incidence in students (OR more than I;CI 95% more than I). History of urticaria in student's sibling and grandmother from mother related significantly and were risk factor for asthma incidence in students (OR more than I;CI 95% more than I). It was concluded that students and their family history of atopy related significantly and were risk factor for asthma incidence in students. Students and their family history of asthma and rhinitis related significantly and were risk factor for asthma incidence in students. (Jurnal Epidemiologi Indonesia, 2000, 4:3: 17-25)
