Abstract
Background: The incidence rates of GERD in various regions of the world were continued to increase. Elderly and obesity could trigger the occurrence of GERD. In this study, a validated GERD-Questionnaire in Bahasa Indonesia was used as a diagnostic tool of GERD. This study was conducted to determine whether there is an association between elderly and obesity with the incidence of GERD.
Methods: This research was a descriptive analytic study using cross sectional design. The study was conducted in March until October 2017 at Atma Jaya Hospital Jakarta with a total of 100 patients, whom had minimum age of 18 years old, as a research subjects. Age, body weight and height were taken among the subjects and GERD-Questionnaire was filled. Subjects with age more than 60 years old were categorized as elderly. Body weight and height were entered to the formula to measure the body mass index. And the scores of GERD-Questionnaire were summed and categorized into two groups, score below 7 was not suspected as GERD and score 8 – 18 was suspected as GERD. Data analysis was performed using Chi-square test with 95% of confidence intervals (a=0.05).
Results: The data analysis showed no significant association between elderly and GERD incidence (p=0.356) and a significant association between obesity and GERD incidence (p=0.032).
Conclusions: This study found no association between elderly and GERD incidence in patients of Atma Jaya Hospital Jakarta. This study also found an association between obesity and GERD incidence in patients of Atma Jaya Hospital Jakarta.
