Isi artikelEven though worm infestations rarely cause death, its chronic endemic is potential to decrease human resource quality in the future. Considering the cause on the nutrition and health status, worms can effect the decrease of the schools performance in the children and decrease work productivityamong adults. Several efforts had been done to control worm infestation problems. However,as they are sporadic, top down, project-oriented and unsustainable, up to now, worm infestationstill becomes a problem in the community health. For 12 years Yayasan Kusuma Buana (YKB)had conducted worm infestation control program at primary schools in Jakarta. Through a preventiveeducative approach, which was developed based on the community based program; the programhas successfully covered 34 schools in 1987 to 5907 schools in 1999. A series ofiraining onhealth to the teacher, student and parents was conducted and followed by stool examinations and provisionof worm medicine twice a year. To enforce "Clean Living Behavior" as the main key to prevent worm, several community activities were conducted. As a result, worm prevalence has decreasedfrom 78,6% to 11,7% wipe wonn prevalence decrease from 64,7% to 6,5% round worm from62,2%to 5,9% and Hookworm 1,4% to 0,02%. For 12-year period, 1,428,695-stool specimens wereexamined and 555,695 dosage of worm medicine was provided to children. The program was alsoexpandedwith health services and seminars for teachers. Parents' contribution of 1000/chi1d! yearswascollectedand mounted to Rp. 679,176,892 to enable expansion of activities to 507 primary schoolin Jakarta, to cover laboratory examination and medication expenses. This program activities showedthat worm infestation problems can be controlled and prevented through a communitybasedapproachand education developed at primary schools.
