The objective of this study was to find out the relationship between worm infestation and school achievement using cross sectional study design. Twohundred primary school children were selected from 4200 primary school children of Ampana Kota sub-district by simple randomization. Two children were excluded from the study due to incompleteness of data. Stools were examined for the presenceof geohelminth's egg using a direct method. Three consecutivequarterly school achievement scores data were obtained from school records. Data regarding children and parent characteristics, nutritional status, morbidity, symptoms and signs attributed to worm infestation, school attendance, availability of home study facilities, study behavior and parental perceptions to worm infestation and school achievement were collected by using a questionnaire and all treated as potential confounding factors. Data were evaluated by using independents t-test, analysis of variance and multiple linear regression where appropriate. It was revealed that School achievement of Bahasa Indonesia were consistently and significantly lower among children with Ascariasis compared to other groups even after removal of potential determinants, days of absence and study frequency. Mathematics scores of the third quarter were significantly lower among children with Trichuriasis, but the relationship disappeared after controlling for days of absence and study time frequency. Ascaris and mixed infestation produced lower school achievement in Mathematics, Natural and Physical Science, Social science, Civics and Religion, and total school achievement, but also after controlling for both determinants the relationship disappeared. None of the first quarter school achievements were related to worm infestations. It was concluded that Ascaris infestation was related to verbal skills and competency of primary school children. Other competency and skills indluding Mathematics, Natural and Physical Science, Social Science, Civics and Religion Science were more likely to be related to days of absence and study time frequency of the children, First quarter school achievements could be related to extrinsic motivation of the children.(Jurnal Epidemiologi Indonesia, 2000. 4:1: 17-26)
