Abstract
to addiction will cause a compulsive desire to consume substances despite the negative effects. The negative perceptions and attitudes towards patients with substance use disorders might affect professionals’ attitude towards patients.

Objective : To explore perceptions and attitudes of addiction among first-year medical students.
Methods : First-year medical students of Atma Jaya University, batch of 2016 (N=194) participated in this descriptive cross-sectional survey. First-year medical students haven’t received neither knowledge nor training in addiction. IPQ-RA was used to evaluate perceptions of addiction, while the MCRS questionnaire was used to evaluate student’s attitudes towards addiction.
Results : Students showed ambiguous in 5 out of 7 statements that represents perception of addiction. They perceive addiction as a condition with severe consequences and emotionally stressful. There were no negative perceptions in the results. Students agreed that addiction is caused by psychological attributions. Students showed positive regards towards patients with substance use disorders.

Conclusion : Students had positive perceptions and positive attitudes towards patients with substance use disorders. Future studies need to explore if training will influence perceptions and attitudes amongst students as they become doctors who will treat and handle patients with substance use disorders.
