Abstract
Background : Dengue fever (DF) is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease in the world. Dengue fever is endemic in Indonesia and continues to be a public health concern. Dengue disease transmitted through the bite of Aedes sp. containing dengue virus. One way to prevent dengue disease is to maintain a healthy environment that emphasize reducing vector breeding site. In any health problems, knowledge, attitude and behavioral factors always play an important role.
Methods : The study design of this research is cross sectional study with concerning the knowledge, attitude and practice of the dengue fever prevention among the people in Muara Siberut district. The respondens are given the questionnaire to know the level of knowledge about dengue fever, the attitude and the prevention behaviour regarding dengue fever.
Result : There was no significant association between knowledge status and age, education, socioeconomic and family history (p-value > 0.05). There was no a significant association between family history of DF and attitude towards DF (p > 0,05). There was a significant association between occupation towards level of knowledge of DF (p=0,044) and association between information resources towards level of knowledge of DF (p=0,018). The participants had moderate knowledge, negative attitude and most of them reported had poor preventive practices against dengue prevention and control. There was significant association between levels of knowledge and prevention behavior (p=0.218. But, there was significant association between attitude toward prevention behavior (p=0.044) and association between levels of knowledge toward attitude of DF (p=0,009).
Conclusion : The knowledge of participants was moderate, the attitude was negative and the practice was poor. Therefore massive awareness campaigns are required to help the people against DF and to limit the future spread of DF in our country. Future campaigns should focus on education and encouraging individuals and families to adopt such simple, inexpensive preventive actions.
