In Indonesia there are more than 80 million people who were born between 1980s and 2000s. These people are called Millennial Generation. Millennial has been living and growing up in a globalized world with multi-cultural influences and technological advancements. This conditions shape the trait and characteristic of Millennial Generation as digital native. As one of the tourism megatrend, Millennial is a rapidly growing segment and expected to represent 50% of all travelers by 2025 (Tutek et al, 2015). Also as digital native, the technology and digitalization influence Millennial’s decision making process heavily. The trend of Millennial traveler is expected to be further boosted by the accelerated implementation of digitalization. One important key in digitalization is mobile phone or smartphone that was predicted to account more than 30% of total online travel value. As smartphone is expected to enhance the travel experience of Millennial, it is important to understand how Millennial uses their smartphone during travel. Using adaption of travel buying behavior (Mathieson and Wall 1982) and consumer decision making process (Kotler & Keller, 2012), a qualitative approach had been applied with in-depth interview as research method. The interview data and other literature research were analyzed to understand Millennial’s smartphone use during travel decision making process. The research found that Millennial tourist use smartphone mostly to collect information regarding their travel, to prepare and experience their travel, and to evaluate their travel experience. The result proofed that smartphone is essential to enhance travel experience of Millennial. |
