Isi artikel
A study of the social and cultural characteristics of primary and secondary school teachers in four countries in South America has provided figures to define a profi le of the gender composition according to level of teaching and age group.1 Female teachers dominate the primary level in the four countries. Argentina has the highest number of females in its work force (84.7%), while Peru, where the presence of women continues to be dominate, recorded a comparatively high percentage of males (37.5%). The prevalence of women is far higher at primary level than at secondary level. Almost 90% or more of primary school teachers in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay are female, while in Peru three quarters of the teachers are female.
