Isi artikel
Two types of linguistic theories have been particularly concerned with the analysis of 'only': pragmatics, in particular focus theory and presupposition theory, and generalized quantifier (GQ) theory, the latter in the negative sense that it has been eager to show that 'only' is not a GQ. Judging from such analyses, then, it would appear that the analysis of'only' is not at home in the grammar of natural language. The main negative point of the present article is to dispute this. The main positive point is the observation that there are strong relationships between 'all', 'the' and 'only'. We propose a way to account for them.
